Bloody Cure

A lighter twist on a Bloody Mary

Ingredients:
Vodka
Tomato juice
Lemon juice
Salt and pepper

How to make it:
Mix everything in a glass with ice. Stir and garnish with celery or a lime wedge.

The Code Blue Cocktail

A fun and refreshing cocktail made with rum, cream of coconut, pineapple juice, and blue Curacao liqueur for that signature “code blue” color.

Ingredients:
1 cup ice
2 fluid ounces pineapple juice
1 fluid ounce light rum
1 fluid ounce blue Curacao liqueur
1 fluid ounce cream of coconut
1 pineapple slice for garnish
1 maraschino cherry for garnish

How to make it:
Combine ice, pineapple juice, rum, blue Curacao, and cream of coconut in a blender. Blend on high speed until smooth and an even blue color. Pour into a chilled highball glass. Garnish with a pineapple slice and a maraschino cherry.

Ingredients can also be poured over ice for a non-blended option. Enjoy!

Code Blue Mocktail

Non-alcoholic option

Ingredients:
1 cup ice
3 fluid ounces pineapple juice
3 fluid ounces coconut water or sparkling water
1 fluid ounce non-alcoholic blue Curacao syrup
½ fluid ounce cream of coconut
1 pineapple slice for garnish
1 maraschino cherry for garnish

How to make it:
Combine ice, pineapple juice, non-alcoholic blue Curacao syrup, coconut water or sparkling water, and cream of coconut in a blender. Blend on high speed until smooth and an even blue color. Pour into a chilled highball glass. Garnish with a pineapple slice and a maraschino cherry.

The Vital Signs Mule

Mocktail Edition

Ingredients:
½ ounce fresh lime juice
1 ounce cranberry juice
½ ounce ginger syrup or a few muddled slices of fresh ginger
4–6 ounces non-alcoholic ginger beer
Splash of club soda for extra “respiratory volume”
Fresh mint
Optional: tiny pinch of edible glitter for that “code blue shimmer”

Garnish:
Lime wheel
Cranberries or pomegranate seeds
Mint sprig “stethoscope tubing”

How to make it:

Ralph brings more than two decades of experience in healthcare simulation, where his work reflects the very heart of what SimGHOSTS represents, keeping simulation environments running smoothly, supporting educators and learners, and ultimately improving patient care outcomes.

With a BS in Healthcare Management from Western Governors University and an MA in Education from National University, specializing in Educational & Instructional Technology and Higher Education Administration, Ralph offers a powerful blend of technical expertise and educational insight. His background reflects the evolving needs of modern simulation programs, where technology and pedagogy must work hand in hand.

Ralph’s hands-on experience spans a wide range of simulation operations, including high-fidelity human patient simulation, simulator programming for dynamic, scenario-based learning, virtual reality integration, and full simulation and skills lab operations and maintenance. He is deeply experienced in aligning simulation activities with curriculum goals, supporting faculty development, and providing the technical training needed to empower both instructors and learners.

Beyond his technical skillset, Ralph is a passionate advocate for best practices in simulation and the critical role that simulation operations professionals play in shaping the next generation of healthcare providers. He is especially committed to fostering collaborative, culturally responsive learning environments where meaningful, lasting learning can take place.

Ralph’s experience, perspective, and dedication make him an outstanding addition to the SimGHOSTS Board. We are thrilled to have him join us as we continue to support and elevate the global simulation community.

We are excited to welcome Rémy Roe, PhD, CHSE, CHSOS to the SimGHOSTS Board of Directors!

Dr. Roe brings a powerful combination of leadership, technical expertise, and passion for advancing healthcare simulation. A combat veteran, he previously served as the lead instructor at the largest medical simulation training center within the U.S. Department of Defense—an experience that shaped his deep understanding of high-impact, mission-driven training environments.

He later joined Stanford University’s Center for Immersive and Simulation-Based Learning, where he served as a Simulation Technology Specialist and lecturer. During his time there, he played a key role in designing and delivering advanced clinical education programs within a leading academic medical center.

Currently, Dr. Roe serves as a Regional Manager of Graduate Medical Education simulation, where he leads multi-site simulation strategy across hospitals and residency programs. In addition, he contributes as research faculty, mentoring resident physicians in study design, methodology, and scholarly development.

Dr. Roe’s work is especially impactful in the area of equity in healthcare education. His research explores the application of minority stress theory within simulation-based learning environments, and he has published in Advances in Simulation on this important topic. He is also actively involved in national initiatives through the Society for Simulation in Healthcare’s DEI Committee, helping to shape a more inclusive future for simulation education.

His unique perspective—bridging operations, education, research, and equity—makes him an incredible addition to the SimGHOSTS Board. We are confident his leadership will help guide our community as we continue to grow, innovate, and support simulation professionals around the world.

This Valentine’s season, the SimGHOSTS community proved once again that innovation and creativity are at the heart of healthcare simulation. Our Simulation Personal Ads Valentine’s Contest invited participants to give their simulators a voice — and you delivered in the most hilarious, heartfelt, and imaginative ways possible.

From high-fidelity mannequins searching for committed clinical partners to task trainers ready to “practice safe skills,” the entries had us laughing, smiling, and appreciating the personalities behind the technology we use every day.

As the field of healthcare simulation continues to grow and diversify, so too does the complexity of the roles that support it. Healthcare Simulation Technology Specialists (HSTS) are uniquely positioned at the intersection of clinical education, operations, and technology—but as each of you know, the scope of our work has expanded since the original SimGHOSTS Capability Framework was launched in 2019. An effort is now underway to update this framework so it cast most accurately reflect current professional practice and expectations both nationally and internationally.

Our global community has changed significantly in the past several years, and data from community members are essential for growth. We’re inviting simulation professionals around the world to participate in a new SimGHOSTS Capability Framework Update Survey. Your voice will help align the Framework with today’s roles, responsibilities, and workforce realities.

This initiative builds on prior work to better understand the HSTS profession. For example, an earlier HSTS workforce survey published in STORM magazine (Lisa Paganotti et al., 2023) provided important baseline insights into the characteristics and variability of our workforce, helping to identify the heterogeneity of job titles, responsibilities, and experiences among healthcare simulation technology specialists (HSTS).

In addition to role and responsibility definitions, modern simulation practice is increasingly emphasizing structured needs assessment and professional development. Tools like the Simulation Operations Needs Assessment Tool (SONAT) have been developed to help simulation operations professionals and their programs better assess competencies, identify gaps at hire or across a career, and guide targeted professional development planning. Although access to the full SONAT journal article (Jarrod Young et al., 2026) may require subscription, the published research supports SONAT as a validated instrument for simulation operations needs assessment that complements broader workforce competency frameworks.

Together, these efforts underscore the evolving professional landscape and the importance of aligning operational and capability standards with the real-world needs of HSTS and simulation operations specialists alike. The research study below offers the unique opportunity to submit a position description in addition to your responses to help in this critical review.

IRB Study Information

Responses to this survey will help evaluate and enhance the content of the SimGHOSTS Capability Framework to align with the current culture nationally and internationally for the Healthcare Simulation Technology Specialists. The SimGHOSTS Capability Framework was created in 2019 and revision considerations are being made to modernize the content to synchronize with current expectations for Healthcare Simulation Technology Specialists (HSTS). SimGHOSTS has partnered with affiliate organizations including SESAM and ASPiH to survey a larger community in healthcare simulation. You might want to participate in the survey if you would like to contribute to the body of information on roles and responsibilities for Healthcare Simulation Technology Specialists or are an individual that defines oneself as a Healthcare Simulation Technology Specialist. Participation in this survey is voluntary and you do NOT have to participate in this survey. All responses are voluntary and anonymous. There will be no compensation for participating in the survey and there are no significant risks. The primary aim of the survey is to redefine the job titles, job descriptions, roles, and responsibilities for Healthcare Simulation Technology Specialists. Your feedback is highly valued. Information provided in the survey will assist to benchmark Healthcare Simulation Technology Specialists advocacy and information on a global scale. We understand participation in this survey is a time commitment. This survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. SimGHOSTS is proud to announce the appointment of Nadir Ayrad to our Board of Directors. With a dynamic and multidisciplinary background, Nadir brings a wealth of experience, creativity, and leadership to our global community.


Nadir holds a Bachelor of Science in Public and Institutional Relations and is also an accomplished actor, producer, and designer. A Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE - SSH), Nadir also holds a Professional Certificate in Design Thinking, exemplifying his commitment to innovation in healthcare education.

Based in Miami, he serves as the Director of Research and Development, Director of the Standardized Patient Program, and Co-Director of the Healthcare Simulation Program at Fundación Garrahan. Nadir is also the Co-Chair of the INACSL Regional Interest Group for Spanish-Speaking Latin America (RIG-INACSL) and a reviewer for the INACSL Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice Endorsement Program.

His international influence spans multiple institutions, including Boston Children’s Hospital, the Center for Medical Simulation at Harvard, Penn State Hershey’s Medical Center, and Finis Terrae University in Chile. He is a Simulation Fellowship Specialist and International Faculty for several prestigious programs, and he has contributed to simulation leadership initiatives through Liderlatam - Harvard TC Chang and Oxford's Harris Manchester College.

Beyond healthcare simulation, Nadir has an extensive background in the performing arts, having participated in over 45 theater and audiovisual productions in Argentina as an actor, dancer, stage designer, special effects designer, and executive producer.

He is an active member of several professional organizations, including SSH, IPSS, INACSL, ASPE, FLASIC, SOCHISIM, SASIM, and of course, SimGHOSTS.

We will compare and contrast SP programs across different settings, including academic institutions, hospital-based environments, and hybrid approaches that integrate both.


This session will also delve into the distinctions between working with established, formal SP programs, implementing informal or developing SP programs, and the challenges and opportunities of operating without a formal SP structure. Lynne Madori is a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (since 2018) and works for a hospital-based simulation center in Dallas, TX. In that role she assists in day-to-day operations and development of the Simulation Program. Her main responsibilities include developing and leading facilitation training, professional development, and evaluation; manikin and equipment operation; gathering and analyzing evaluation data for curricula and sessions (skills and simulation) to ensure continual relevance and quality; working with curricula and session document authors to create relevant and impactful simulation events. She leads the organization’s Education & Curriculum Workgroup which reviews new and existing curricula to ensure high quality standardized documentation in alignment with our organization’s values and the Simulation Program’s strategic priorities. She also has experience developing inventory maintenance and storage solutions, in-situ simulation for hospital and ambulatory sites, and managing a Standardized Participant Program. She has been a member of SimGHOSTS since 2019, leading the Professional Education and Standards of Practice Workgroup. She also holds active memberships with The Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH), Association of Standardized Participants (ASPE), and the International Association for Simulation in Nursing (INACSL), and Simulation Professionals of Texas (SPOT), regularly presenting at SSH and SimGHOSTS conferences. She is also a member and contributor to number of simulation Facebook groups.

For several years Pocket Nurse has partnered with The Gathering of Healthcare Simulation Technology Specialists (SimGHOSTS) to provide scholarships to the SimGHOSTS USA event. We are excited to announce the winners for the SimGHOSTS 2024 USA (SG24USA) event.

For the seventh year in a row, Pocket Nurse is continuing its sponsorship of the SimGHOSTS symposium by providing two scholarships to individuals/institutions in need. Susan Davies has been with the Charleston Southern University College of Nursing since 2015, overseeing the daily activities of clinical simulations. She strives to create immersive learning experiences that prepare our students for real-world challenges. She has successfully implemented innovative simulations aimed at improving patient safety, interprofessional collaboration, and clinical competency. 

Shannon Summers has been in simulation operations for over six years and has 13 years of experience in the medical field Shannon specializes in creating immersive and effective simulation experiences. Over the last two and a half years, she has served as a vital member of the simulation team at Upstate Medical University. Her journey in healthcare simulation has been marked by her earning the CHSOS (Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist) credential. Her next goal is to obtain the CHSOS-A. Shannon is passionate about the power of simulation in healthcare education, and is proud to contribute to the mission of Upstate Medical University in preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals.

SimGHOSTS proudly announces a second collaboration with Fundación Garrahan for the "International Congress on Healthcare Simulation and II International Symposium on
Operations in Healthcare Simulation: A Key Meeting for the Future of Healthcare," which will be held May 30 - June 1, 2024 in the vibrant city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. SimGHOSTS speakers include Dr. Scott Crawford, Nick Brauer, Ben Stobbe, and Jacqueline McBride.

The conference will focus on the advancements, challenges, and opportunities in healthcare simulation through keynote lectures, roundtables, and immersive practical workshops. Topics will include the fundamentals of healthcare simulation, standards of best practice, simulation modalities, and other fundamental aspects, including a special track for operations in healthcare simulation by SimGHOSTS, a topic of great relevance and novelty, especially in LATAM.
